Landing the shuttle

I knew that an unpowered glide was a tricky way to land anything, especially the shuttle, but I didn't know exactly how tricky it was. It seems that during long duration shuttle flights, the pilot uses simulations to practice landing during the flight. That is, being two weeks out of practice is deemed too risky.

The shuttle's an amazing piece of technology, but it's but no means a practical space transport system.
