Books, Books, Books

On the weekend Chapters / Indigo had 25% off all books! Spring Madness! This was an especially good time to get some, because on Saturday at the Friends of the Merril Collection Annual General Meeting David and I both got these volunteer awards from TPL. Lorna had put us in for them for general support over the years, especially going down to City Hall several years back.

This was before the Merril Collection moved to its new building. As construction was behind, TPL proposed boxing everything up and putting the books in storage until it was completed. We all thought this was a Bad Idea as the Merril at that time was getting very little support from TPL, and once the books were in storage there would be a real chance they would never see the light of day again. Anyway, there was a meeting at City Hall for people to speak on the issue, and Dave and I went down to speak. It started woefully late because of the previous bunch of speakers going on and on (a Greek group and a Macedonian group were butting heads over something), but we stuck it out. Anyway, along with a nice thank-you card, we each got a $35 Indigo book certificate.

I ended up using mine on a copy of Strange Victory by Ernest May, which argues that the Germany victory over France in WWII was not due to vast German superiority over the Allies (he presents evidence that the German generalship thought they were likely to lose), but rather to an excellent invasion plan, and the Allies misreading the intelligence. It's a great book and I've meant to pick it up for a while. I also got Declare by Tim Powers, the book my brother did for the SF book club last month, and The Eyre Affair by Jasper Fforde, the book I'm doing this month. (After the con, of course.)
