Off to Santa Ana

Work is sending me to Santa Ana in California on Sunday to teach a training course. Ordinarily they wouldn't send someone from Toronto to do this, but right now everyone else is either on vacation or has just taught a course, so I'm on the hook. I'm fairly blah about doing it, but this is one of those times you take one for the team. The course material is very well developed and is just on how to use the software I've been using for the past five years, so I can certainly handle it. That the company laid off a chunk of the workforce just before Xmas is a prime motivating factor as well.

The real problem is that it's going to be pretty boring. I was there once before about two years back, and where I'm staying is just hotels and company buildings (that the company HQ is practically across the street from the hotel is the only good point). There's nothing of interest anywhere nearby, and since it's been well over a decade since I've been behind the wheel there's no way I'm renting a car and taking to California streets. At least I can catch up on my reading, I've got to read The Yiddish Policeman's Union for the upcoming book club meeting.

Well perhaps the upside is there is no snow there? And it's warmer? That'd be a plus for me.

Remind me to post someday about the time Japanese nationalists tried to set up a Jewish homeland in Manchuria. One of those tragicomedies of history.
