The Engineer

The Life and Times of Donald F. Simmons

Reasonable Safe. For Now.

Consulting engineering usually takes a hit in economic downturns, and as I work in a small Canadian office of a large American company, everyone here has been a tad nervous about the future. We had a not very reassuring staff telecom this week where it was announced that salaries were being frozen for 2009 (annoying, but I can live with it) and that some people were probably going to be let go maybe but they weren't sure who or when.

But yesterday my boss talked to me and said that his boss's boss told him that we looked to be safe for the foreseeable future. It's the engineers who are making the company money right now, and laying them off means losing experience with the analysis software that you can't get back with new hires. So my job looks to be reasonably safe for now.

MAJOR UPDATE: Looks like it's Black Friday in California. I was just told that up to 200 people are being let go there (mostly sales and IT people) but that our office is safe.
