Upcoming SF Events

My SF book club, the Space-Time Continuum, will be have a meeting on John Wyndham's Day of the Triffids this coming Saturday, noon, at the Palmerston library, 560 Palmerston (a stone's throw from Bathurst subway station). Come on, you all read this in high school!

Cory Doctorow will be appearing at the Merril Collection on Thursday, May 1st at 7 PM to promote his new young adult novel Little Brother (click the link for details). Cory's always plenty of fun so please check it out. Thanks to bakkaphoenix for arranging this event.

Also at the Merril May 10th will be the 12th Annual Fantastic Pulp Show and Sale, a dealer's room of pulp magazine, paperbacks, reprints, and related collectables. It'll be $2 to get in, but it's worth it just for the browsing fun. There will also be tours of the Merril Collection, and a pulp cover slideshow and talk in the early afternoon, which is always a lot of fun.

Finally, author Laurell K. Hamilton, of the Anita Blake, Vampire Slayer series, will be at the Merril Thursday, June 12th at 7 PM.

Triffids is actually one of the Wyndhams I haven't read, although I watched the BBC adaptation because my friend Fiona is obsessed with Maurice Colbourne. My favourite Wyndham is Trouble with Lichens. My favourite might-as-well-be-Wyndham is A Scent of New-Mown Hay. Cr-ee-py.

Trouble with Lichens flipped me out. Why are they troublesome? Because they make women, but not men, immortal! Can't have that!

No, IIRC they made both immortal - the female scientist just had a sneakier plan for using them to Make the World a Better Place....

Gonna be at that pulp sale!

The Anime/SF Swap Meet is on the same weekend as AWA in Atlanta, so probably won't be making that one, sadly enough....

I really enjoyed DAY OF THE TRIFFIDS.

You should drop by the meeting then!
