Right now I'm reading Perdido Street Station by China Mieville for the SF book club meeting this Saturday. The best word to describe this book is "phantasmagorical". The main character is really the sprawling, intensely alive, endlessly inventive city of New Crobuzon, populated by all manner of creatures, some natural, many not. I'd compare it to Stephenson's Snow Crash in some ways, except Mieville feels less slick, and more real.

When I first heard of the author, I assumed China Mieville was a woman, only to be quickly corrected by Peter Halasz. The back of this book makes it clear that not only is he male, he looks like a British soccer hooligan.
