Chow Down!

The Stephen Chow onslaught here in Toronto continues! Last night Kung-Fu Friday screened his 1993 comedy Flirting Scholar.

For once, he doesn't play some bottom-of-of-the-barrel goof. Instead, he's a top-of-the-line goof, one of China's "Four Scholars" (who have the local equivalent of boy-band status), a master poet, painter, and kung-fu expert, who is nevertheless unhappy because he has eight nagging wives who live for Mah-johnn, and a no-good brother who's always hitting him up for money. But when he spots Gong Li in a crowd, he becomes a servant in her household to woo her. Many hijinks and much slapstick ensue.

The movie also has Cheng Pei-Pei (the Jade Fox from Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) as the head of the household, and Gordon Lui (36th Chamber of Shaolin, Kill Bill) as the "Evil Scholar", who killed Stephen Chow's dad. it was a lot of fun.
