Movie update

Saw Kung Fu Hustle on it's opening day Friday. I've already seen it at the film festival last year, but needed to see it again, especially with some friends.

Go see this movie. Hong Kong comedic actor Stephen Chow (Shaolin Soccer, of which there is an in-joke in this movie) pulls out all the stops for his homage to the kung-fu movies of the seventies. Most of the kung-fu masters in the movie were stars in the seventies, and one of the great things about KFH is that Chow gives them all plenty of room to shine. Indeed, he's actually in only maybe half the picture himself.

The fight scenes are awesome, and the characters are all insane. The film drips with creativity, and every minute sets out to entertain you. It won the Best Film award at the Hong Kong Film Awards, and it's a shame that a movie like this, full of talent and energy, could never be considered for an award like that here.

Also in the line of great films, caught Fast, Cheap, and Out-of-Control at the Bloor with my brother Saturday, a free screening to help kick off Hot Docs. By Errol Morris (which Dave and I have tickets to see interviewed on Saturday) the documentary seems to be about four guys with odds jobs (hedge sculpture r, lion tamer, naked mole rat expert, and robot designer). But as we listen to these men, and Morris uses the vocals of one over scenes of one of the others at work, the whole thing starts becoming a lyrical, even profound statement on the human quest to achieve and accomplish. It's an amazing piece of work (as is everything I've seen Morris do) and is highly recommended.

Your brother has changed his name to Saturday? Or is this a brother I haven't met? :P

The expert is naked, or the mole rats?
